This is a brief overview of when you can make a citizen's arrest under section 24 Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE). This is different from a police arrest and has strict limitations. There are also risks associated with it that you should consider before deciding to take action. A citizen's arrest can only be made for an indictable offence that is in progress or that you reasonably believe someone is committing.

You may only use reasonable force and must take the person to a Magistrate or police officer to make the arrest valid.
